Black Tie for Great White Way?
It is time I spoke out about a topic I comment on regularly, but have yet to add to this blog. Last night I took a friend to see Avenue Q on Broadway. Its a great show that I have seen before, but I’ll get back to that topic. Right now I want to address the audience of the show. As I scanned the audience last night, as I do at my frequent appearances at Broadway shows, I was amazed to see at least 75% of the audience was wearing jeans. Of those people, there were a good number wearing sneakers and sweatshirts and generally looking like they were headed to a movie theater versus a live Broadway show. I was alarmed. Is there no more respect for the Great White Way?
On some level, I know there must be respect. People pay exorbitant prices to witness this live talent. Maybe they feel that respect has been noted through their credit cards and their wardrobe doesn’t matter. Maybe its a practical approach to tourism. Tourists sightsee during the day in their comfort wear and then head right to the theater. Its just a logistics issue. Whatever the reason, I worry that this is a negative trend. Have people forgotten that theater is something you dress for? Has the paradigm shifted and applause and high prices is great enough gratitude for those on stage sharing their talent?
Whatever the reason, I would like people to reconsider their attire before heading to the theater. I really think it heightens the experience and makes it all the more special.
